Search Wyoming County Cases

Start any Wyoming County case lookup by picking the right court layer, because the search path depends on where the case lives. Circuit Court and Family Court files sit in one system, while Magistrate Court matters run through a different office, and payment searches serve a much narrower job than a true records search. Hunting by exact case number cuts down false matches, though a careful name search often turns up the number in the first place. Whatever the online results show, they are only an aid. The clerk remains the authority when a file is missing, a paper is not posted online, or a certified copy is required.

How to Search Cases by Name

One state hub feeds all the search tools. The official court-record access page routes searchers to two of them. WVPASS covers publicly available Circuit Court documents. Magistrate Case Record Search, also called MCRSearch, handles basic Magistrate Court case information. Family matters are filed through the Circuit Clerk. Confidentiality rules can limit what a public name search reveals.

  1. Decide whether the matter began in Circuit, Family, or Magistrate Court.
  2. For a Magistrate matter, open MCRSearch and enter the last and first names shown in the case.
  3. Review the county and case number so a same-name result is not mistaken for the wanted case.
  4. Copy the case number, court, and visible status before asking the correct clerk for a document.
  5. If the result is missing or unclear, call or visit the clerk instead of treating silence as proof that no case exists.

Three Wyoming County Lookup Tools, Three Jobs

WVPASS, MCRSearch, and the Magistrate Court Payment System each do a different job. The WVPASS launch material describes public Circuit Court documents dating to 1999. It also covers free public registration and paid downloads for regular public users. MCRSearch is a free Magistrate index. It caps results at 30 records. It shows no document images. MFP takes one payment identifier and does not provide a complete docket.

WVPASS
Public Circuit Court documents, subject to registration, fees, and access limits.
MCRSearch
Basic Magistrate lookup by first name, last name, or case number; documents come from the clerk.
MFP
A payment lookup by citation ID, case ID, or payment-plan ID, not a case-history search.

Each tool answers a different question. Keeping the three jobs straight stops a payment status from standing in for a filed order, a final result, or the full Wyoming County docket.

How to Search by Case Number

An exact number is the cleanest identifier. Carry it between a search result and a clerk request. Official Wyoming County documents show formats such as 16-F-71, 20-C-76, and 22-0007. Those examples come from different document contexts. They do not establish one universal live format. Copy each letter, digit, and separator exactly. Note the court and county rather than guessing what a segment means.

Take the number route when a name produces too many hits. In WVPASS, compare the number, caption, title, and date before opening a document. A notice may carry a related number. Give the clerk both numbers plus the document title. The clerk can confirm the division and whether the item belongs to the same register.

When Wyoming County Results Hit the Limit

The official Magistrate search description limits a result list to 30 records. A broad query can therefore omit the row you want. This can happen even when the record is public. Narrow it with a known number. Preserve the spelling from a citation, summons, receipt, or court notice.

No match is not a finding: Search the other court layer, check the identifier, and contact the clerk about recent, older, or restricted material.

Magistrate Clerk Jessica R. Daniels keeps the lower-court records. The office sits at 44 Cedar Street, Pineville. Mail goes to P.O. Box 1500, Pineville, WV 24874. The telephone is 304-732-8000, extension 218. Public terminals are described as available in Magistrate Clerk offices. That is a practical fallback when the online CAPTCHA or client interface is unavailable.

What a Case Search Shows

What you see depends on the tool. A result is only an index or doorway. The docket is a chronological register, while a document is the filed item behind one entry. An official PDF may carry far more detail than a result row, and a certified copy adds the clerk's authentication, which must be ordered from the custodian.

Case numberThe identifying string to copy exactly.
Court and countyThe jurisdiction that holds the case and answers questions.
Caption or partiesThe title and party roles shown in the public record.
Document title and dateThe nature and date of a public Circuit filing or order.
Judge or counselFields that may appear in a public document, not every result row.
Status or dispositionA label to repeat exactly and verify against a final order.
Clerk stampA filing marker visible on some official images.

Wyoming County Search Products in Plain Terms

A docket entry can identify an event. It does not give the full words of the pleading or order. A public image is convenient, but it is not automatically certified. A transcript is a separate record of spoken proceedings. It may require a court-reporter channel the online index does not supply.

Search index
Basic fields used to locate a matter.
Docket
The chronological record of filings, settings, and court action.
Document image
A view or download of a specific public filing.
Certified copy
A clerk-authenticated copy from the office that holds the record.

Ask for the product needed. A request for the "case" alone may be too broad. A case number, title, approximate date, and copy type let the Wyoming County clerk identify the item with less ambiguity.

County vs Statewide Case Search

Wyoming County does not run one all-purpose local portal covering each court. The main public systems are statewide tools, but each points back to a local custodian. Tony Paynter, Wyoming County Circuit Clerk, holds Circuit and Family Court records. Jessica R. Daniels, Magistrate Clerk, holds the Magistrate record. She supplies documents MCRSearch does not show.

LayerCoverageNext step
WVPASSPublic Circuit documents; sealed and juvenile material excluded.Ask the Circuit Clerk for missing items or certified copies.
MCRSearchBasic Magistrate data, no documents, up to 30 results.Ask the Magistrate Clerk for documents and authoritative detail.
Counter, phone, or mailNon-online records, current detail, inspection, and copy requests.Give the court, number, title, date, and copy type.

The County Clerk is a separate office with its own workload. It keeps probate, wills, land instruments, vital records, elections, and county records, not the Circuit Court register.

Wyoming County Digital Search Timeline

These services arrived in stages. Wyoming County is listed as live for Circuit and Family e-filing from October 24, 2021. The statewide CourtPLUS transition finished July 15, 2024. The Judiciary announced public Magistrate record search in 2024, and WVPASS launched in 2025. A statewide data dashboard followed in 2026. Those milestones help explain why an older file may not behave like a new one. E-filing through CourtPLUS or WV File and Serve is a filing route. It is not the public lookup itself. Pro se filers work through the Circuit Clerk where electronic filing is required. For a historic case, a document that did not reach the public platform, or a file with an access restriction, the local clerk remains the sound route.

Restricted Cases and Access Rules

Not every Wyoming County case file is public. WVPASS leaves out sealed cases and juvenile material. West Virginia Code §49-5-103 sets the limits on juvenile records, while §48-1-303 covers confidentiality in domestic-relations matters and §48-22-702 shields adoption records. Privacy and access questions also fall under Trial Court Rules 15A.24 through 15A.26. In Family Court, an order may be public even when the pleadings, financial exhibits, recordings, or transcripts are not.

If the system blocks you, ask why. Is the barrier a seal order, a statute, a juvenile or family rule, or just a redaction? Then ask whether some version exists anyway. It might be a redacted record, a public order, a docket-only view, or a written access decision. The court decides access, not the portal. A missing result proves nothing, and working around a safeguard is never the answer.

Send a Searchable Wyoming County Request

A good records request names a specific item, not a person's whole history. Circuit Clerk Tony Paynter takes mail at P.O. Box 190, Pineville, WV 24874, and the office sits at 24 Main Avenue. Call 304-732-8000 for anything from the circuit side. Magistrate material goes through the Magistrate Clerk. Before you send anything, ask about format, cost, and whether the court docket material is available online.

  • Name the court and Wyoming County.
  • Provide the exact case number and caption if known.
  • Identify the document title and approximate date.
  • Say whether inspection, a plain copy, or a certified copy is needed.
  • Request a fee estimate and available delivery method.

West Virginia FOIA §29B-1-3 gives you a general right to request records. That right stops at a court seal or confidentiality rule, which the statute does not override. To pull the full file behind a docket result, use the Wyoming County Court Record Search process.
